APA Format Generator - Free APA 7th Edition Citation Generator Online
Getting citations wrong costs marks. APA format has specific rules for punctuation, italics, capitalisation, author initials, and date formatting that differ by source type - and the rules for citing a journal article are different from the rules for a website, which are different again from a video or a report. Keeping track of all of it while writing a paper is exactly the kind of thing that leads to small but costly formatting errors.
This free APA citation generator handles the formatting for you. Choose your source type - website, book, journal article, newspaper, video, or report - fill in the details, and both the full reference list entry and the in-text citation are generated instantly, formatted to APA 7th Edition standards. No account needed. No ads. Copy and paste directly into your paper.

Why APA Citations Are Harder to Get Right Than They Look
Most students know the basic structure - author, year, title, source. The problems start in the details. Does the journal name get italicised? Yes. Does the article title? No. Do you include "Retrieved from" before a URL? It depends on the source type and whether it has a DOI. Do you use the full first name or just initials? Initials only. What if there are two authors? Use an ampersand between them in the reference list but spell out "and" in the text. What about eight or more authors? List the first six, add an ellipsis, then the last author.
None of these rules are arbitrary - they're standardised by the American Psychological Association for consistency across academic publishing. But remembering all of them while writing a 3,000-word paper is asking a lot. A single formatting error on a reference page can cost marks in any course that grades citation accuracy.
An APA format generator removes the memorisation requirement. Enter the source details, get a correctly formatted citation. The rules are applied automatically - you just need to make sure the information you enter is accurate.
What the SM Calculators APA Format Generator Does
Select your source type from six options: Website, Book, Journal Article, Newspaper, Video, or Report. Each source type shows the relevant fields for that citation - a journal article asks for volume, issue, pages, and DOI; a website asks for the URL and optional retrieval date; a book asks for edition and publisher. Fill in what you have, click Generate APA Citation, and two things appear: the full reference list entry formatted for your References page, and the in-text citation formatted for use within your text. Copy either or both with one click.
Both outputs follow APA 7th Edition - the current standard used by universities and journals worldwide since 2020. The reference entry uses correct hanging indent formatting, correct italics placement, correct punctuation between elements, and correct author formatting with initials. The in-text citation uses the author-date format APA requires, with the correct punctuation for parenthetical citations.
No account required to generate, view, or copy any citation. No ads between you and the result. Some citation tools require registration to access full functionality or show advertising to free users - this free APA citation generator online has neither. Open it, generate citations, copy them, close the tab.

APA 7th Edition Citation Format by Source Type
Every source type has its own citation structure in APA format. This reference table shows the format for each of the six source types covered by this APA format generator - useful for checking the output or understanding what each element in the citation represents.
| Source Type | Reference List Format |
|---|---|
| 🌐 Website | Author, A. A. (Year, Month Day). Title of page. Site Name. URL |
| 📖 Book | Author, A. A. (Year). Title of work: Capital letter also for subtitle (ed.). Publisher. |
| 📰 Journal Article | Author, A. A. (Year). Article title. Journal Name, Volume(Issue), pages. DOI |
| 🗞️ Newspaper | Author, A. A. (Year, Month Day). Article title. Newspaper Name. URL |
| 🎬 Video | Creator, A. A. [Channel Name]. (Year, Month Day). Title of video [Video]. Platform. URL |
| 📋 Report | Author, A. A. (Year). Title of report. Organisation. URL |
💡 Pro Tip - Always use initials, not full first names, in APA citations - J. K. not Joanne Kathleen. For journal articles, always include the DOI if one exists - it's required in APA 7th edition. If a website has no individual author, enter the organisation name in the Author Last Name field. If no date is available, enter n.d. (no date) in the year field. These are the four details that catch most people out.
Who Uses This Tool the Most
University Students
Essays, research papers, dissertations, and lab reports all require APA citations in psychology, education, business, nursing, and social science courses. Getting the formatting right matters for grades - and this APA citation maker handles the formatting so you can focus on the content.
Researchers & Academics
Journal submissions, conference papers, and academic publications all require accurate APA references. Generating citations for a large reference list manually is time-consuming and error-prone. Using a generator for each source and checking the output is faster and more reliable than formatting every entry by hand.
High School Students
Many extended essays, IB papers, and advanced coursework now require APA format. For students encountering formal citation requirements for the first time, a generator that shows the correct output makes learning the format much more concrete than reading a style guide.
Teachers & Professors
Academic staff preparing reading lists, course materials, and published work need consistent APA references. A quick generator is often faster than manually checking formatting rules - especially for less common source types like government reports or online videos.
Writers & Content Creators
Blog posts, articles, and online content that reference academic sources sometimes need formal citations. Journalists, policy writers, and content professionals who need to cite a study or report in APA format can generate an accurate citation in seconds without needing to know the style rules in detail.
